Recent events
In the past, the Eastern School Board had come under fire for the declining conditions of the local K-12 school St. Joseph's All Grade. In Sept 2007, mold was found in the building's gymnasium roof, and thus the roof had to be replaced. This issue was overlooked for a long time, before pressure from community members made the school board investigate further. Since then, the school has been kept in mediocre shape due to a lack of funding by the local government.

Every year, usually the first weekend in August, The Fire Dept. hosts a festival now known as "The Bottom of the Bay Festival" which often attracts many community members, those from other communities, as well as sightseers. In 2020 the festival was not held, due to quarantine restrictions, as well as public opinion preferring the festival not go ahead.
